Kakapo; The World's Most Special Parrot The Kakapo, or owl parrot, is one of the rarest and most special parrot species in the world, found only in New Zealand. This nocturnal, heavy, flightless bird lives on land, unlike most parrots. Due to its owl-like appearance, the Kakapo has a unique face and is highly social. Unfortunately, this bird is critically endangered, and only about 250 individuals of this species remain in the wild today. Kakapo conservation programs are successful examples of environmental efforts worldwide.
