Lions naturally live on two continents: Africa and Asia. The African lion (Panthera leo leo) is found mainly in the savannah, grasslands and open woodlands of African countries such as Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa and Botswana. These areas provide a suitable environment for lions to hunt and live in groups.
In Asia, the only remaining population of the Asiatic lion (Panthera leo persica) lives in the Gir Forest in the Indian state of Gujarat. This protected area consists of dry forests, shrublands and grasslands, which are suitable habitat for this endangered species.
