Today`s Book #02
All the Light We Cannot See ~ Anthony Doerr's
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Tells the interwoven stories of two teenagers during World War II, whose paths ultimately cross in the besieged French city of Saint-Malo.
*Marie-Laure LeBlanc*, a blind French girl, flees Paris with her father, a locksmith at the Museum of Natural History. He carries with them what might be the museum's most valuable and dangerous jewel, the "Sea of Flames." They take refuge with Marie-Laure's reclusive great-uncle, Etienne, in the coastal town of Saint-Malo. As the war intensifies, Marie-Laure and Etienne become involved in the French Resistance, using an old radio to broadcast crucial information.
Meanwhile, in Germany, an orphan boy named *Werner Pfennig* discovers a passion and talent for repairing radios. This skill earns him a place at a brutal Nazi military academy, and he is soon put to work tracking illegal enemy broadcasts. Intelligent and sensitive, Werner becomes increasingly aware of the human cost of his work.
The novel alternates between Marie-Laure's and Werner's perspectives, detailing their separate struggles for survival, their moments of hope, and the moral complexities they face. Their lives converge in the final days of the Battle of Saint-Malo, where Werner, tasked with finding the source of the resistance broadcasts, is led to Marie-Laure's doorstep. The story is a poignant exploration of human connection, the invisible threads that bind people together, and the enduring power of hope in the darkest of times. 0 reply
