Amidst the current Israeli attack on Iran, it is notable that Iran has not initiated an aggressive war against another country in approximately 200 years. The historical pattern shows that Iran has generally been on the defensive in major military conflicts over the past two centuries.

Iran was among the most severely affected victims of chemical weapons use after World War II, when Saddam Hussein's Iraq systematically deployed chemical weapons against Iranian forces and civilians during the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988). Iraq conducted more than 30 targeted chemical attacks on Iranian civilians alone, making this one of the most extensive uses of chemical weapons in modern warfare.

While Iran has not launched direct conventional wars of aggression, it has been involved in proxy conflicts and provided support to various allied groups throughout the Middle East since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, which has been a source of regional tension.
