VIENNA -- Austrian security forces carried out raids against 72 alleged Islamic extremists this week ahead of the 23th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in the United States, citing the potential for copycat violence on the date of the plane hijackings that killed nearly 3,000 people. The raids occurred across the European country on Tuesday, before Wednesday's anniversary, because the 2001 tragedy remains symbolic for extremists and has inspired copycat attempts, the Directorate of State Security and Intelligence said Thursday in a statement. Authorities thwarted an attempted attack last year on anniversary at the Vienna central station, and the risk remains high on the date around the world, it said. Tuesday's raids came a month after authorities foiled a plot to attack planned Taylor Swift concerts in Vienna which were then canceled. Austrian officials said the main suspect, a 19-year-old Austrian man, was inspired by the Islamic State group and sought to kill tens of thousands of fans.

Heidenheim head into the weekend as the surprise leaders in Germany, having scored six goals in their opening two Bundesliga games and conceded none. The club were playing in the fourth tier 15 years ago but finished eighth in their debut Bundesliga season last term to earn a spot in Europe, where they will face Chelsea in the Conference League. After starting the current campaign with victories over St Pauli and Augsburg, they visit Borussia Dortmund on Friday evening, with the Champions League runners-up also unbeaten and yet to concede a goal this term. "We will just try to keep the momentum going and be completely present on Friday," said Paul Wanner, the 18-year-old midfielder who has impressed with two goals already for Heidenheim this season on loan from Bayern Munich. Vincent Kompany's Bayern have also won both their opening games and visit newly-promoted Holstein Kiel on Saturday (17:30 BST).

More than a month after the Olympic Games got underway in the pouring rain, it seemed fitting that the Paralympics came to a close in similar fashion at a wet closing ceremony in Paris. Thousands braved the soggy conditions inside the Stade de France on Sunday, with athletes from the 169 delegations parading and dancing through the venue to officially mark the end of the Games. There were performances from French electronic musician Jean-Michel Jarre and DJ Martin Solveig, among others, as well as elaborate light shows and a spectacular fireworks display.

Hamilton Ndlovu's premium vehicles to be auctioned amid investigation into procurement irregularities. Hamilton Ndlovu's fleet of vehicles, including a Porsche Panamera GTS Sport, a Porsche Cayenne S Coupe, and a Grand Cherokee SRT, are set to be auctioned tomorrow, Wednesday. This move follows the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) uncovering that firms connected to Ndlovu secured contracts through manipulating emergency procurement processes at the start of the Covid-19 outbreak. Bank records showed that only about R15 million was allocated to PPE, with the rest, about 90%, going to Ndlovu for personal use. Recently, his luxurious Bryanston home in Johannesburg was sold for R7.1 million, and bank accounts of his associated companies were frozen with a balance of R42 million. An audience of over 400 people is expected at the auction.
