In 2019, I was in one of the lowest places I’d ever been. Everyone I knew had gotten into university. I was still at home. No school. No clear future. Just my saxophone and long, quiet days. At home, there wasn’t much encouragement for the path I was taking. My parents didn’t really see music as something to build a life around. They kept urging me to find “something else” to do. But the sax was my only lifeline. I practiced every single day. Hours on end. Not for an audience. Not for applause. Just to feel like I still had something to hold onto.

On the way, the team leader told me the others had already counted me out. “It’s always OAU students that win Discovery,” they said. “And this guy’s just coming with a sax? Nah.” But I’d been in the shadows for too long to let whispers break me. At the first round, names of those who qualified were projected on a wall. My name wasn’t there. I froze. Turns out they made a typo—someone else’s name appeared instead of mine. But I was actually in. The next day, I was randomly asked to surprise a professor with a birthday sax performance. Midway through that, I got a text: “Next round of the competition starts in 2 hours. Be there.” I wasn’t even mentally ready, but I dropped everything and ran. That second round went by like a blur. Then came the final. Over 1,000 people, gathered inside the legendary Oduduwa Hall. I was the outsider. No vocals, no flash. Just me and my sax. But I knew one thing. I had paid my dues in private. And this was the moment to let it all speak.
