Do you have a preferred smart home or IoT system you use? I am only *just* getting started with some little Arduino ideas, but I have friends who are all about Zigbee, and I've heard WLED is the way to go for lighting..

Yep! I use Home Assistant for everything, including my Zigbee devices, WLED, etc. It’s a bit of a learning curve, but its power and compatibility is unmatched.
