The inventor of penicillin was Sir Alexander Fleming, a Scottish physician and microbiologist. He is best known for the discovery of the enzyme lysozyme in 1923 and the world's first effective antibiotic, benzylpenicillin, from the mold Penicillion Rubens in 1928.
