📷 10 tips / advices if you're new to documentary / travel photography

1⃣ Be curious, ask questions 
If you show genuine interest, you'll soon open doors and be part of the family / community.

2⃣ Avoid giving money for a photograph
Money can modify the nature of your relationship. It will also change how locals perceive their own culture and way of life.

3⃣ Public spaces
When you arrive in a public space like a market, interact with locals before you press the shutter, get their agreement. To get authentic photographs, leave and come back later discreetly.

4⃣ Fixed focal lense
A zoom lense can push you to be static whereas a fixed focal to be more mobile, more flexible and find different angles and point of views to better tell your story.

5⃣ Don't be offended if sometimes you find closed doors
When you visit a community, you are the guest. Always keep in mind you enter their individual and collective intimacy. For various reasons like religious or social, they might decide it's not intended to be public.

6⃣ Avoid staged scenes as much as possible
The people you meet are not actors :)

7⃣ Mutual respect takes time
You might have to come back several times before you press the shutter.

8⃣ Keep the necessary distance
Leave the smallest cultural fingerprint.

9⃣ Show gratitude
Show them the picture you took and leave a print if possible, They are great portable printers on the market.

Be honest and tell them what are the photographs intended for (exhibition, NFT, media, own social media etc...)
