Storytime 📖 I remember when I had to join the Screen Actors Guild, I was still in school and because of labor laws I literally was not old enough to work enough hours to pay the dues to join so I had to write letters to people in my family who, as a child, I only could guess might have a little extra money they could share with me that I even was willing to pay back. It’s a big deal to join SAG-AFTRA - once you become eligible, you only have a small window of time to get the money together and pay - it’s not easy - you have to get union work as a non union worker to make yourself eligible. (Yes, a catch 22, and to make it more complicated, production actually gets fined for choosing non-union workers instead of someone who is already in the union and they have to prove the non-union person they are hiring is special, literally; there’s paperwork that has to be filled out.)
