Theory: no coin, no community.

That is: in the absence of shared purpose, digital communities break down into status signaling and endless conflict. 

So, I’m thinking of opening up a prize for a service that makes it easy to create and admin token-gated subnetworks on the Farcaster protocol.

there are multiple things that could've contributed to this. the wider ecology of twitter itself has changed, maybe bc elon, maybe other things like tiktok. a bunch of us have become tired busy parents. some poasters stopped posting entirely. maybe some projects were ~completed

been talking with some of the olds about maybe trying to rekindle things somehow– maybe on here, maybe somewhere else, but i think the main thing is actually the projects. without poaster-driven projects, i think we mostly end up with lowest common denominator slop discourse

Alt theory: 

The structure of social media (as encapsulated by the algo and content types) have just shifted away from the equilibrium that encouraged building community. 

Short videos are just a more effective tool for generating engagement, and so "people having rich interactions" has been deprioritized.
