I think it being an audiobook also helps in this regard as well, especially that I was on a long drive, so basically can just let it flow past you. 

Reading it yourself somehow makes you more complicit with the material.

for me it was scary. the violence, like scalping, described in detail. 
intense. i put it down and never came back to it.
