I posted about this years before the IPO but Coinbase has never been our ally in as much as they never let us early crypto folk, who built their platform for them effectively, invest

It's pretty much illegal to allow retail to to invest meaningful amounts in private companies. 

I was in charge of this fundraising round (Series D, the one that Kevin participated in). We looked into a bunch of options but there are were too many complications.

What was the blocker to using platforms like seedrs or seedinvest (or whatever one circle acquired) similar to what revolut did a few years ago?

It's just more overhead for not much benefit.

Especially when a lot of fintechs at the time were dipping their toes into crowdfunding (monzo/bux/revolut) with the later 2 both having crypto offerings, albeit not as full on crypto as coinbase at the time (outsourced to fireblocks and the likes)

The company did a direct listing for a reason.

I don't think people on the outside appreciate how much crap these companies deal with on the legal / accounting / regulatory side of things.

Easy to be a populist when you don't have to make the decisions.
