i once had to have a very awkward convo with a female supervisor about respecting my personal space. whenever she’d swing by my desk to chat she’d get so uncomfortably close to my face that i could whiff not only what she had for lunch, but dinner the night before. she was taken aback and apparently i was the first person to ever mention this to her. the entirety of our meetings after that one were incredibly awkward because i could see her visibly struggling with how close to get to me and fighting the urge to move in closer. sometimes she’d even blurt out “am i too close?” (which if you have to ask, then probably, yes). i bring this up because for some reason just now, at an entirely empty airport boarding area, a woman chose to sit right next to me. there are dozens of empty seats and she chooses the one connected to mine. i get that in some cultures personal space is just not an option. there are nuances. but in general, i just don’t get people’s inability to respect personal space. anyone else, or this just me being extra?
