Iβve been telling younger designers for years that the regular act of design is more craft than art. Which is equally important. I think we see this often flipped where things are pushed to the point of illegibility for the vibes as art is the only celebrated metric, when the main goal of design should be to communicate a concept/information clearly. Thereβs always room for art, but sometimes it canβt be the primary driver

You're gonna have a hard time finding people who even know the difference between craft and art; most have a vaguely romantic idea of all three terms and use it interchangeably

Yeah ainβt that the truth. Itβs also this grand snobbery that craft is somehow not as good as art - all of the greatest artistic accomplishments were rooted in craft - a hard pill to swallow for the current crop of designers. It boils down to the question of ego I think - whatβs more important for a designed object getting you recognition or communicating your clients ideas well?
