i love america and blockchains so today on my favorite day of the year i will share why i love america and blockchains so much my parents protested at tiananmen so i grew up with stories of them hiding in villages as tanks rumbled by, their own parents begging them to stay home in early june as tensions reached a fever pitch between demonstrators and the government, students walking back from tiananmen crying and bloodied, friends who were murdered by the state, and families whose children never came back from peaceful protest yet had no recourse with the state for their loss

i think a lot of western folks fail to fully appreciate freedom because they've never felt it ripped away from them and there's so many legal protections (although imperfect) available to the individual whereas in china: -the same political party that murdered thousands of college kids in 1989 is still in power - my friend is regularly summoned into the police station for talking about xinjiang / the uyghur cause privately over wechat - citizens only share their political opinions behind closed doors with trusted friends and family, never in public - citizens are imprisoned for publicly voicing opinions deemed dangerous by the state - if you are religious, you must know a guy to gain access to underground networks to gather for mass (no freedom of religion) - the state controls all media that citizens have access to (another chinese acquaintance literally works at china's ministry of propaganda 'the publicity department') - the government can and will freeze your bank account to exert control
