Sad news: Stamen (SF data + cartography studio, major influence in the data viz scene since 2000’s) is shutting down Map Stack. Map Stack was a free service that let you create and host custom map tiles for Google Maps-style web maps. It never made money, so it’s no surprise Stamen wants to retire it. But damn, Map Stack was an amazing tech solution for designers. https://stamen.com/farewell-map-stack/

For real. Stamen is an industry leader, far ahead of the pack when they started. One of the first proper design shops that saw data as a material for design, they pioneered data-driven ways of working that might seem obvious 20 years later, but only because of Stamen and others did it first. Still not too many pure data viz design studiosaround, Stamen and Fathom are the names that come to mind for me.

Trust me, I haven't forgotten Nick! We used to hang in NYC, haven't heard so much from him since he moved to Malmö and had a baby. He was a big part of that wave of data + design work in the 2010's, though. I can't help but feel that things have gone more mainstream and standardized these days. That innovative edge is less visible, at least to me.
