It’s really shitty that you can’t create an advanced directive that says, “If I get dementia or lose all cognitive function, I would like to end my life.”

Seeing my dad go from smart, strong, & independent to confused, weak, & unable to care for himself is fucked. We should let people go out with dignity, not in diapers.

Let me tell you a good story. My granny was of ancient folks who spoke Karelian language, and her dementia started with forgetting present things, but old times she remembered well, so at some point she wouldn't recognize me if i talk to her in russian. She basically was trying to convince me i'm a different person and like asking "why have i changed the surname" 

I took two year courses of Karelian (which is also supposed to be my native language, but as everyone was speaking russian, karelian just didn't stick) and after two years when granny was at the brink of her last days i attempted to talk to her in karelian, just told her who i am and she recognized me. I know it because we had a secret word that she replied with. That's how i learned the language as well and keep the ancient folk alive

Dude i feel you. Humanity adopted all sorts of different fuckery, but when it comes to euthanasia, which in some cases like this is the most right and humane thing to do (for all parties involved), it's considered unethical and unjustified. In that kind of setting i just wish I'd never let my kids experience my decay irl. Cuz i guess if i have dementia I wouldn't care too much about myself. 

Anyways, stay strong. And i think hopefully your dad can at least recognise some of you, so cherish those moments, cuz there's not much you can do otherwise. It's the pay back respect to our parents for they gave us life and it comes full circle

I would like to live in a world in which we had full autonomy over our own bodies and could create such directives.

MAID has its issues, but it should 100% be available to people to people if they want it as long as they meet certain criteria
