Our natural world is endlessly fascinating. An interesting fact about chlorophyll I found out today is that it shares a striking structural similarity with hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying molecule in human blood. The central difference lies in the metal ion at the core of each molecule: chlorophyll contains a magnesium ion, while hemoglobin contains an iron ion. A fascinating example of how nature can use similar structures to perform different functionsβphotosynthesis in plants and oxygen transport in animals.
