Web5: The Next Evolution of the Internet
The internet has changed from the read-only Web1 to user-generated Web2, and now the decentralized promises of Web3. There’s a new contender gaining momentum: Web5.
Some say that web3 achieved decentralisation, what if they're wrong?
What is Web5?
Unlike Web3, that relies heavily on tokens, smart contracts, and various blockchain ecosystems, Web5 focuses on user sovereignty, identity, and data ownership.
Web2 + Web3 = Web5
Key Features of Web5:
Decentralized Identifiers/DIDs: Your online identity isn’t tied to web2 social, or web3 wallets. It’s yours, portable anywhere.
Decentralized Web Nodes/DWNs: Instead of storing data on servers owned by Big Tech, data lives in an encrypted, personal data vault.
No Tokens/ Speculation: Web5 isn’t trying to create the next crypto boom. It’s building infrastructure without financial speculation.
Privacy & Utility: The goal is not to gamify the internet with tokens, but to make it safer and more user-controlled. 10 replies

Have ownership and proprietary of your data. such that you wouldn't lose your life's work and be dismissed off one day just because you broke a silly term. Start to migrate your data while you can to havens where you can control.
You don't have ownership of your X or FB account, they do. As long as someone else somewhere else could have your logins, your account isn't safe. With Blockchain you know you and only you have your private keys, that's privacy.
Soon, you may never be able to "request to download" your data. Don't take my word for it.
Try nostr or mastodon or farcaster, any form of decentralised social media, don't go for "private" go for "decentralised" that way, you know there's no fishy monopoly.
Some of this wouldn't make sense now, not for a few years, keep in mind that data monopoly could have any of two outcomes:
1. It no longer exists, web5 has solved the problem of data ownership
2. It isn't solved and we are at the mercy of big data
Think wisely and deeply on these things 🙏🍀 11 replies
