"The Slave Market" (1871) by Jean-Léon Gérôme Jean-Léon Gérôme, a leading figure in the Orientalist movement, frequently depicted scenes from the Middle East, drawing from his extensive travels in the region. The Slave Market is one of his most provocative works, depicting a group of women, enslaved and awaiting purchase. The central figure, a nude woman, is subjected to the degrading process of physical inspection by potential buyers, an act that highlights the brutal objectification inherent in slavery.
