Was thinking about this and came up with a similar 2 by 2 that i think is more intuitive. Novice - acts in an unconstrained manner but does so because they are unaware of societal, moral or technical constraints. Colors over boundaries without awareness or purpose. Apprentice - acts within constraints placed on them by others but is unaware of why those constraints exist or what purpose they serve. Colors within boundaries drawn by others. Journeyman - Understands the purpose of societal, moral, or technical constraints and acts within these constraints. Colors within the boundaries they have drawn for themselves. Master - understands the purpose of constraints and chooses when to act within them and when to discard them according to the current need. Colors across boundaries with meaning and purpose.
