The United States Air Force is one of the main branches of the United States Armed Forces, originally formed in 1907 as part of the United States Army, then founded as an independent branch of the armed forces on September 18, 1947, by the National Security Act of 1947, by the National Security Council of the United States. In 1949, the Air Force, along with other forces, was placed under the command of the United States Department of Defense.
