DirecTV & HughesNet:
The interest of one of America’s most famous aircraft manufacturers in building faster aircraft led to the creation of satellite television and the Internet.
In 1932, Howard Hughes, a wealthy entrepreneur and aerospace engineer, founded Hughes Aircraft. As an aerospace and defense contractor, the company built many early aircraft prototypes, including the H-4 Hercules, known as the Spruce Goose. Hughes conducted many of the prototype test flights himself, set several airspeed records, and survived several crashes. Hughes Aircraft designed everything from helicopters and spy planes to air-to-air missile systems. A subsidiary, Hughes Space and Communications, launched the world’s first geosynchronous communications satellite in 1963 and later built a lunar rover for NASA. In 1985, General Motors purchased Hughes Aircraft and merged it with several other companies to create Hughes Electronics. 0 reply
