The first operational air defense unit in the United States, known as the 1st Airborne Squadron, was founded in December 1913. It was part of the United States Army Signal Regiment and was stationed at College Park Air Force Base in Maryland. In essence, the unit was tasked with testing various aircraft and equipment to identify and eliminate aerial threats. These efforts, although small in scale, became the cornerstone of the development of modern air defense in the United States.
