As AI tools continue to flood digital spaces, many online communities are integrating "AI agents" into their platforms. But the question remains: do these communities truly need them—or are we just fascinated by fancy chatbots?
In some cases, AI agents provide real value. They can automate moderation, answer repetitive questions, and keep conversations flowing when human moderators are offline. For large or fast-growing communities, AI offers scalability and 24/7 availability. In knowledge-based groups, AI can surface relevant threads or summarize complex discussions, making information more accessible to everyone.
However, not all AI integrations are as useful as they seem. Many so-called agents are just basic chatbots with limited understanding of community context or tone.
