We need to signal more broadly that validators should change the gas target to 60M.

Validators - are you doing your part?

Writing complex and nuanced takes, viewed by few, appreciated by none.

Why is this not done through software updates? Is it because of increased resource requirements? Some more info and links would be great.

Because the decision falls on the validators. The protocol states its our/their call. Ethereum, for very good reasons, doesn't have onchain governance, only this little thing. Maybe updates setting it as an overridable  default, with clear notification, is reasonable.

In terms of resources, there are two things to consider (1) resources needed now and (2) cost to future validators (mostly memory). Unless you're running an ultra-low power device, building blocks won't be affected. It was heavily tested (can find links if needed). Much of the constrains were around future storage and state growth, going into category 2. We now have good short and long term solutions, so it will not be an issue and home stakers. Time to pump the gas.

My understanding is that this will only affect my validator when a block is proposed. I am just worried about my computer not coping with the extra requirements. But I am using MEV, so most of the time I assume they will handle it.
