what is the market taker getting for either form of consolidation? an unrelated IDE and codepilot is extremely likely to manifest in months, much shorter than the 12 months vesting shenanigans.

Acquisitions are good because:

1. Increases number of exits

2. Number of exists increases number of startups that get started / funded

Unless it's going to result in clear consumer harm, then we should allow them to happen.

I tend to agree about Cursor and Claude Code. likewise, with Grok trying to catch up.

imho, if Alphabet doesn't already have the engineering force to spin their own flavor of environment, it's not like any acquisition is really forcing the other competitors to provide further innovation to the end consumer.

same with Apple and Xcode, if that can't improve in-house, I can't see any acquisition magically turning that campus into more of a dogfooding  environment. there is such a ridiculously enormous pool of (especially cultural) capital that the most direct approach to competition would be poaching from more undergrads, rather than post-grads (including dropout startups).

besides, there's also Perplexity chasing Google, so even an absence of acquisition and further stalling in this status quo still remains a force for one of the firms already on the path to providing consumers more advantage over choice.

If acquisitions were simply legal (like before), everyone at the company would have benefitted. Distorting the market, you're getting weird games.

Cursor is still independent and doing well. Claude Code.

In this specific case, this market consolidation is actually likely to result in increased competition and consumer surplus.
