fundamentally, a society can't be maximally free with avoidance or despondence. freedom is not license to harm or tort, i.e. it still carries a negative right so the middle road is a "neighbor culture" that doesn't infringe on identifying/refusing what is perceived to be harmful. gift-giving is the OG societal precursor.
