I just spoke to an AI telemarketer. I knew because it launched into a sales pitch and if I interrupted, it awkwardly lagged in pausing to let me speak I asked “are you AI?” and the voice laughed and said noo, me? I use a computer for work but you’re speaking to a human! I asked if they wore glasses (I tried to ask something innocuous that would illicit a human response) and after a long pause, it hung up on me I got curious and called back, then did some investigating online. this is a service companies pay for to sell just about anything without hiring a sales team or even outsourcing customer service or sales overseas The thing that stood out to me was the agent’s response me asking whether or not it was AI. It laughed and acted as if the question was preposterous and said “no ma’am, you’re speaking to a human” I assume a lot of services like telemarketing will be outsourced to AI in the near future, but the direct lying about being a human really threw me off. Has anyone else experienced something like this?
