How we got to where we are in the US: 
1. People too lazy or willfully ignorant to care about voting
2. MAGA 
3. People who don't understand binary outcomes in presidential elections
4. Dems being generally terrible at politics and being more concerned about maintaining status quo than working for their constituents

Of course media manipulation, echo chambers, social media, etc. and many other factors made all of it worse.
