Without the fork, there’s no guarantee/hope that FC keeps running if/when Neynar shuts down or decides to pivot.
The FC network is currently a permissioned set of nodes. Hypersnap is a permissionless set of nodes. Anyone can run a hypersnap node. Soon there will be token incentives to run a node.
If nothing else, it’s a useful escape hatch if anything happens to Neynar. Philosophically, I don’t believe a VC-backed company can create a truly decentralized social platform.
