Ethereum should consider implementing a "contract garbage collection mechanism" to boost network efficiency. As the blockchain grows, unused or redundant smart contracts accumulate, clogging storage and increasing node operation costs. A cleanup mechanism could automatically identify and remove inactive contracts, freeing up space and reducing bloat. This would lower gas fees for users and improve transaction processing speeds. However, challenges include ensuring security to prevent accidental deletion of active contracts and reaching consensus on what qualifies as "garbage." A potential solution could involve a time-based expiration for contracts with no activity, paired with an opt-in renewal process. Such a mechanism would enhance scalability, making Ethereum more sustainable for long-term growth while maintaining decentralization. Careful design and community consensus are critical to avoid unintended consequences.
