Setup Openclaw today on an older laptop.
Found myself excited and disappointed.
Using it for personal stuff and I want it to have messaging, email, and voice-call capabilities.
I was surprised how difficult it was to get it all setup. Still missing a few things after several hours.
I was most surprised by how bad it is at using tokens. Blew through $20 in tokens so fast! Mainly because input tokens cache for memory/context.
I’m sure there are many optimizations worth implementing. But setup was not for faint hearted and left me wondering.
Why did this form factor take off like it did?
Here is where I think the real innovation may be happening.
As I was setting up (via terminal) I realized the biggest difference between what I was experiencing with openclaw va. Claude Code is my sense of expectation for one vs. the other.
With CC I carry this sense of me dictating something to be done. With the output being the “done” thing. With OC I noticed a sense of “I need you to do X” with an expectation of receive help or relief.
I’ve been thinking about OS systems for the last year. I was excited to hear all the fascinating things about openclaw, and continue to be about all the possibilities.
But today I grew a little skeptical on this final form facto and grew in conviction that an intelligent OS is the direction of compute and computers.
Excited to do a longer write up too. Gn!
