reading “on the spiritual in art” by wassily kandinsky (the father of abstract art) & it’s completely breaking my worldview he speaks about the way abstraction leaves room for open interpretation, and in turn brings us closer to the realm of the immaterial, or “the spiritual”

he’s a vehement opponent of materialism he believes the scientists of his time are coming to the conclusion that science can’t answer the biggest questions of the universe he believes it’s the duty of artists to be “prophets” of the world and bring the future near

he doesn’t believe in “art for art’s sake” he believes much of modern art has lost its spirit. artists, influenced by the material age, have been deceived that technical mastery & acclaim are the pinnacle of art, rather than deeper meaning & purpose.
