Dang the more I think about this, the smarter it is. 

Creators don't need to dump on their collectors. They don't need to manage a token. Collectors can play the incentive and trading game if they want, but the creator still probably gets max value. Maybe there's more value in the after market, but imo 90% of the time the auction will probably produce max value based on the auction mechanics/speculation.

@goldytalks, I wonder if the team was cooking this for a lot longer than they let on...so that just when TBA hype was highest + creators were figuring out a way to manage coins, Merkle team could swoop in and announce a better mechanism to reward creators.
