Kawabata and his ‘heart-shaped face’ dogū Dogū are anthropomorphic clay sculptures that first appeared during the Jōmon period (14,000 to 300 BC). Most have been found intentionally broken, which is interpreted as evidence of their ritual use. They were likely linked to healing, motherhood, fertility, and, in the later phases, to funerary practices.
