Kawabata and his âheart-shaped faceâ dogÅ« DogÅ« are anthropomorphic clay sculptures that first appeared during the JÅmon period (14,000 to 300 BC). Most have been found intentionally broken, which is interpreted as evidence of their ritual use. They were likely linked to healing, motherhood, fertility, and, in the later phases, to funerary practices.
