As an elder millennial, I’m genuinely perplexed by Gen Alpha fashion. Why are so many kids dressed like a Handmaid or Amish farmer? And rocking iPod Nanos? Are we just… fully ironic now? Fashion. People. What’s up?!

IMHO, fashion is about self expression. Some of us grew up learning about fashion by reading well curated magazines & observing thoughtfully styled looks. I used to read GQ magazine in high school lol … But the internet has pretty much wiped those magazines out. Add social media to the mix, and now we have a generation of people with no clear fashion identity. I was honestly horrified when I first started seeing people wearing pajama pants and Crocs in public; it’s become the norm for some. I remember when my daughter went to college she asked me why I didn’t wear sweatpants; I jokingly answered for the same reason I didn’t let her watch the Kardashains growing up 😂 Unfortunately in social media, it’s not the smartest voice that shapes trends, it’s the loudest. I could go on forever complaining about TikTok, but I’ll stop here.

Honestly, what worries me even more than questionable fashion choices is something I recently read: Ted Kaczynski’s manifesto is gaining attention, and some people actually find it fascinating. That’s deeply unsettling. The guy was a genius but also schizophrenic 😱

I feel for parents right now. Coming of age is such a fundamentally different experience to our own story. I imagine it’s hard to contextualize experienced for modern day kids.
