The Miho Museum is one of the most poetic and philosophical architectural projects of the 20th century, designed by I. M. Pei, the architect behind the Louvre Pyramid. Nestled in the mountains near Kyoto, the museum’s concept was inspired by the classic Chinese essay the Peach Blossom Spring (桃花源) - the tale of a fisherman who accidentally discovers a hidden utopian village, untouched by the outside world. Visitors follow a similar journey: they walk through a winding tunnel carved into the mountain, softly lit from within. At the end, the path opens up to reveal a futuristic suspension bridge and the museum itself - seemingly floating among the forested hills. 📍 Miho Museum. 300 Shigarakichō Tashiro, Koka, Shiga 529-1814

That whole concept feels deeply intentional, like Pei wanted people to earn the experience of beauty through patience and curiosity. Architecture rarely feels that spiritual anymore; this one actually respects the journey as much as the destination.
