TLDR the lowest arctic sea ice extent ever recorded was 1.24m km2 in September 2024. 1.24m km2 above the criteria for a blue ocean event. As of March 19, 2025 arctic sea ice extent is 1.34 m km2 below the extent in March 2012. On our current trajectory we will see a blue ocean event this year.
