i took two weeks off and then wrote an essay about how FC will fuck you up β€” precisely because of how great it is. it's 2,000 words of insults and me being insufferable with no good points to make, but you can still send me tips if you didn't read it. πŸ˜‰ https://paragraph.com/@cbxm/your-brain-on-farcaster

That was a delightfully salty read! Thanks, made me think about what I'm actually doing here, and the different motivations. For me it's not so much about the engagement (it mostly feels like a chore), but the FOMO. When I start thinking about not using the app for two weeks I get anxious that I'm going to lose that $5 weekly reward and it's going to be hard to regain the "presence". Now that I'm writing it it sounds absolutely ridiculous πŸ’€

thank you! i'm very glad you liked it! the big switch that flipped for me was when i learned humans are motivated by loss aversion, not improvement or gain. we want to keep what we have more than we want to acquire something better. helped me understand why my instinct was to maintain a spot on the rewards leaderboard, rather than do something else with my time that might have equivalent or greater value. but then i realized i realized that the leaderboard was occupying more than $5 dollars worth of space in my brain all week every week, and that i was probably losing more than i was gaining, on the whole. made it hurt just a little less to step off. life's tricky, huh?
