The JAMA piece assumes cognitive superiority will settle the question, but medicine lives in the grey. In orthopedics and in healthcare in general, not every case has a black and white answer.
An AI with no human in the loop that can talk one patient into (or out of) surgery they don’t want, or give two patients with the SAME diagnosis different treatment plans, raises trust and accountability issues the performance data doesn’t resolve. Will trust in AI healthcare ever account for this?
Societal adoption will hinge on how we handle that ambiguity, not just diagnostic accuracy.
