I thought growing up meant your kid brain over time like morphs into an adult one. Simple immediate gratification supplanted by broadened horizons and awareness of consequences for a future self. 

What I’ve realized is that kid brain doesn’t go anywhere. 

It just develops layers that filter and refract essentially infant thoughts through lenses of experience, etiquette, irony and mortgages.

This must be true because we see these layers dissolve when we’re tired, scared, hungry or wounded, when suddenly we return to a raw, bewildered version of ourselves that never really left.

Presidents and billionaires at their core terrified children wearing dad’s oversized suit and clutching an old empty briefcase with nothing but scribbles inside.
