do we have companies attributing worker productivity gains to gen AI? my anecdotal experience of trying to use LLMs for writing is... zero productivity gains, no experience of writing (or thinking) better, faster. can generate mediocre writing & conventional ideas endlessly, but turning that mid text into anything I'd want to publish feels harder than just being thinking & writing about something myself from the jump

this is honestly kind of stating the obvious. oh model trained on previous ideas isn't coming up with new ideas? or it doesn't write in the 99th percentile? where it is powerful and def does do productivity gain (for me): 1. writing dumbass website copy, blogs and FAQ that a college intern could write but somehow you find yourself in the position of not having an intern. 2. asking questions on a large and confusing body of text. i've used this a lot when writing new legal contracts. there's a lot of repetitiveness there and dependency on other contracts. like you're adding a new clause: does it conflict with anything else? 3. sparring partner for ideas that are going to generate on your own. don't know about you but I personally think either in sleep or in conversation. so the bottleneck for me coming up with new stuff is finding people that'll do active listening, point out logical fallacies or point out how what i'm talking about is in contradiction or support of previously established ideas.

I think examples one and two are good examples of where gen AI can be useful, and are able to increase personal productivity. I use it similarly. I know lawyers who use it similarly. The third is less compelling to me in part because what does ‘increased productivity’ mean in the context of thinking well? people have been attempting to optimize a process of intellectual inquiry for a long time. See: Zettelkasten & similar personal knowledge management systems. But we don’t really see a correlation between use of these systems or of gen AI and more, better writing & ideas.

i do see faster development of thoughts. i'm no longer rate limited by finding friends that would listen to me yap. again, maybe unique to me cause I can't sit in meditation pose and 'think', i go through ideas when talking to someone but don't require incredible creativity or intelligence from that 'someone', just active listening and being able to place the conversation in the overall body of knowledge.

i actually sympathize with where you're coming from on this one. there's this whole 'oh AI makes everyone a 10x engineer' thing that's a complete lack of understanding of its capabilities. the reason i'm insisting here is that the voice functionality on the phone app has been insanely life changing for me and I think there's a magic here for everyone that shouldn't be dismissed.

I hear you, I’m really glad it’s been magic for you :) I haven’t used the voice functionality, I’ll give it a shot I think part of my question is just: everyone is saying it has a huge impact on productivity (search “ai + productivity” on X) we’ve had some of these tools for years now, show me the data!
