it's interesting that Star Wars has no social media Senators can't just tweet out their thoughts for exposure, they need to do a speech on the Senate floor obviously this is because it was created pre-Internet, but it's a cool demonstration of how blind we were to the way that tech would change communications

Yeah it's funny how most pre-internet sci-fi extrapolated cars, airplanes, spaceships, etc. but didn't envision most of the digital and information technology we have. Even in the 90s they thought that the future of the Internet was going to be through TVs.

You could also retcon it as limitations of hyperspace communications networks. Maybe opening a point to point channel is insanely expensive, so it's rare. Rebels only managed to get access to extremely limited messaging because of the whole tower proximity thing.
