like with most "less palatable" food items, on the belief that it helps with male virility back in my korean corporate days (late 2000s, early 2010s), it wasn't common but still a dish male coworkers would go out to eat together, particularly on hot days and or when a colleague was trying to have kids personally only had it once myself, not so much a fan but kinda sad to see more "culture" get faded by modernity

off the cuff, i'd say it's more in parallel: similarly impacted by western modernization - heavy industrialization, processed foods (convenience), wage driven lifestyles, influence of globalization on societal values, etc. fwiw, even in my childhood (was there from age 4-12) it was considered food only old men eat
