I’m pretty sure old-school reading is just over. When people have a long article or even a book to read they’re just going to ask ChatGPT to bullet point it for them anyways. I already see this happening. The problem is that reading had important neurological and psychological effects that were upstream from democratic society and politics in general. We are going back to premodern oral culture.

This is another reason why techno-optimism in the immediate is misplaced. Oral cultures tend not to develop advanced industrial or mechanical technologies

sometimes i want to argue that, but the technological progress seems to be continuing apace and it baffles me. 

is it not going to happen after all?

is it going to happen to the masses but the elite find a way to keep making progress regardless?

is it happening already like you say and i can't see it because it's early and the effects aren't widespread yet?
