Was talking with prof about this essay and he pointed out to me that literacy loss has created whole generations of people unable to access their culture or past. College diploma holders who are incapable of reading the Bible https://open.substack.com/pub/kittenbeloved/p/college-english-majors-cant-read?utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web Here these college students, English MAJORS, some of them, were asked to read Dickens and describe what was happening in modern language. They were so bad at it the facilitator was sniggering while administering the test

Is it literacy loss or a larger share of the population attending university?

Was just looking that up as well. Yikes 😬 Here's hoping this is a COVID blip or something...

I doubt. High level literacy is not an economically rewarded skill

Maybe not in the center, though I feel like it is at the edges (or smart, high-earners are just generally more competent than this test). A few more thoughts - I wonder if your average STEM student would outscore the English majors. Feel like philosophy majors should be able to crush this but maybe just wishful thinking). - I thought the passage was going to be something crazy if only 5% could interpret it (ala Wittgenstein), but it's, like, not that obtuse. - My experiences in HS/university and observations of classmates, however, mostly match the results of the test.
