Based on what is currently being observed on PS4 and PS5 consoles, many titles purchased since March now appear with an expiration date of just 30 days. Once that period elapses, the game locks up and requires an internet connection to validate the license before it can be played again.
Various players and game preservation communities have tested this on their own systems even while offline and confirm that this is not merely a visual warning: it genuinely prevents access to the content if no connection is available.
This primarily affects recent purchases on the PS4, although reports regarding the PS5 have also surfaced.
All signs suggest that Sony introduced this unintentionally while patching a vulnerability in the latest firmware update. Internal sources describe it as an accidental error that has caused this confusion within both the user interface and the actual system functionality.
As of now, there has been no official statement from the company.
