🇬🇧 Mozilla Urges UK Not to Require ID for VPNs

Mozilla has called upon the UK government to exempt VPN services from potential age verification requirements currently under consideration.
The British government is conducting a public consultation on how to better prepare young people for internet usage.
In this context, the idea has been raised to extend age verification controls to VPNs as well, given that some individuals use them to bypass the verification systems already mandated by digital safety legislation.
Mozilla maintains that these tools are fundamental to the privacy and security of millions of ordinary users—including those connecting via public Wi-Fi networks, working remotely, or simply seeking to protect their online traffic.
They argue quite rightly that mandating age verification for VPN usage would infringe upon the privacy rights of everyone, without genuinely addressing the risks affecting minors.
